John Glenn’s 1962 Earth orbit is well-known to space – and history – buffs. But behind every exceptional man is often an even more brilliant woman. In Glenn’s case, according to the first trailer for “Hidden Figures,” it was three brilliant African-American women.
The film tells the story of mathematicians Katherine Johnson (“Empire” star Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Oscar winner Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (R&B singer Janelle Monáe), three NASA employees who defied racial and gender barriers in order to change the world.
In the trailer, Henson’s character is mistaken by her white male colleagues for the maid, while all three women succeed in baffling a police officer when they reveal their place of business.
The film also boasts original music by Pharrell Williams – who serves as one of the producers.
“Hidden Figures” is set for release Jan. 13, 2017.
