Putting Bobby Knight and Michael Jordan together on a team sounds like a powder keg, but if what Jordan’s 1984 Olympics teammate Sam Perkins says is true, it was tougher on His Airness.
Perkins appeared on SiriusXM NBA Radio recently and revealed Knight was so hard on Jordan after Team USA beat Germany, he left Jordan in tears:
“They made it more of a game than we thought it would be. … Bobby Knight, he got after us. One story real quick: He told Michael that’s the worst he ever played. Now Michael’s going to deny this, but he cried. He cried after the game, because of the fact that Bobby Knight told him, ‘You should apologize to everybody in here.’ I waited for the apology because I thought he was going to actually do it. But he actually cried. …
“He just wanted us to wake up for the next game because anything could happen. That’s the way he coached.”
