Our soul winning passage from the Word of God today is Matthew 24:14 which reads: “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

Our soul winning quote today is from Ed Stetzer. He said: “If [churches] do what missionaries do—study and learn language, become part of culture, proclaim the Good News, be the presence of Christ, and contextualize biblical life and church for that culture—they are missional churches.”

Our soul winning devotional is part 109 of our series titled “What Evangelism Is” from Dave Earley and David Wheeler.

Ten Reasons to Plant a Church (Part 6)

6. Church Planting Expands the Kingdom of God

Jesus told us that the top priority on our lives was to be God’s kingdom. He taught us to pray for the coming of God’s kingdom. He said that unless someone is born again, he cannot even see the kingdom of God. God’s passion is that His kingdom spread to all peoples. His plan is that His kingdom increases through church planting.

Fred Herron makes this case following a careful study of the Word of God:

God’s heart for the expansion of his kingdom is revealed throughout the Old and New Testament. God intends the church to proclaim and demonstrate the kingdom so that his kingdom will spread to every people group on the earth. The passion in God’s heart for the expansion of his kingdom is a desire for all nations to glorify God the eternal King. He has given the church a kingly commission to go into the entire world and make disciples who are loyal worshippers of the King. The heart of God for kingdom expansion is the foundation for planting new churches.

Authors David W. Shrenk and Ervin R. Stutzman also see the kingdom link with church planting. They have written, “Church planting is thus the most urgent business of humankind. It is through the creation (or planting) of churches that God’s kingdom is extended into communities which have not been touched by the precious surprise of the presence of the kingdom of God in their midst.”

Every time we start a new church in a new community we are being a part of the answer to that prayer. Every time a new church reaches a person for Christ, a new citizen has been added to the kingdom of heaven. I fear that there are too many pastors in our nation that have allowed a passion for church growth to supersede a passion for the kingdom of God. It is refreshing to know, however, that many pastors and church leaders are more excited about building God’s kingdom than building their own kingdoms.
