LISTEN: Alive in Christ, Part 7 (Revive the Family, Revive the Church, Awaken the Nation, O Lord #169 with Daniel Whyte III)

A series of homilies on Ephesians

A homily is “a short talk on a religious or moral topic; a usually short sermon; a lecture or discourse on or of a biblical theme.”

Daniel Whyte III
Daniel Whyte III

I am sharing a verse-by-verse series of short messages on Ephesians (as well as other passages of Scripture) specifically targeted at reviving families and encouraging and exhorting husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, and children to do what God has commanded them to do, for if the church is to be revived and the country is to be awakened, the family must be revived first.

TEXT: Ephesians 2:8-10:

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

—-

Vance Havner said, “Revival is falling in love with Jesus all over again.”

Leonard Ravenhill said, “Revival is the Spirit’s passion within the believer to know and to obey the total will of God.”

In their book, The Ten Greatest Revivals Ever, Elmer Towns and Douglas Porter share with us: “No one could anticipate what would transpire in the next few hours as the small group of Moravian Christians gathered in Herrnhut, Germany, to observe the Lord’s Supper on Wednesday evening, August 13, 1727. Those present had a growing recognition that all was not right among them. Though they weren’t as openly critical of one another as they had been only weeks earlier, their leader challenged them to ‘quit judging each other.’ The Moravians in Herrnhut lived in harmony as a Christian community, but the sweetness of the faith seemed to be missing in their lives. When they assembled that summer evening, however, they experienced the presence of God. As a result, they were changed, ‘in a single moment into a happy people.’ The revival went on for a hundred years.”

Many people who get saved think that the conversion experience is all there is to living the Christian life. Many in the church have unfortunately given off the impression that the conversion experience is a magical end-all for new believers. However, after you get saved, you have a long journey before you.

Jesus did the work of salvation for us; now He is busy working in us to make us like Himself. Paul writes that “we are his workmanship.” The word “workmanship” means “that which is made, a manufactured product.” It takes time and care to make a product. Jesus is spending time and taking care to ensure that we become people who will do “good works” in His name.

Dr. John Walvoord and Dr. Roy Zuck states, “The word ‘workmanship’ used only here and in Romans 1 denotes a work of art or a masterpiece. It differs from human ‘works.’ Believers are God’s workmanship because they have been created in Christ Jesus — a work only God can do. The purpose of this creation is that believers will do good works. God’s workmanship is not achieved by good works, but it is to result in good works.”

If you are a believer, even now, God is working in you to make you like His Son. This is the “good work” that Paul speaks of. It is not our own good work. It is God’s work in us that is good; it is Jesus’ work in us that is good. Their good work brings about our new nature. Any good works that we do flow out of this new nature which flow out of the good works of God and Jesus in our life. Thus, even the good works that we do after we are saved are not our own. It is God working through us. Every good work that we do is attributed to Him.

Today, we ought to commit ourselves to embracing the work that God is doing in each of our lives. We ought to submit ourselves to His authority that we may become salt and light that reflects Him in the world.

Let’s pray.

Now, if you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, please keep in mind that the Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” Just pray and ask Him to come into your heart and He will. I will be sharing more on the matter of salvation in the next segment of our service which starts in about 5 minutes.

TEXT: John 13:12-17

12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.

15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

———-

Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.

This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”

This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 204.

Andrew Murray said, “The greatest test of whether the holiness we profess to seek or to attain is truth and life will be whether it produces an increasing humility in us. In man, humility is the one thing needed to allow God’s holiness to dwell in him and shine through him. The chief mark of counterfeit holiness is lack of humility. The holiest will be the humblest.”

The first step to gaining genuine happiness is having a humble spirit and attitude.

The second step is holiness. There’s a statement popular in Christian circles these days that says, ‘Jesus didn’t come to make us happy; He came to make us holy.’ While those words are not untrue, they don’t tell the whole story. The truth of the matter is that those who live holy lives are happier than those who don’t.

A holy life is one that is lived in obedience to God. The disciples had lived with and learned from Jesus for three years, and they had never seen Him do anything wrong. Everything that Jesus did was good and right. He never acted or spoke without God’s approval. Jesus was an example for His disciples, not only in this matter of foot washing, but in their daily conduct.

Jesus said, “For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.” Jesus wanted His disciples to treat each other and others in the same way that He had treated them — with love, kindness, fairness, mercy, and grace. Jesus wanted them to live their lives in a way that was pleasing to God and that brought honor to Him.

“Holiness” is not mystical or super-spiritual. It is simply having a heart and mind that wants to please God, and then choosing to obey God. The Bible Exposition Commentary said, “It is not enough just to know the truth; we must put it into practice. James 1:22-27 makes it clear that the blessing comes in the doing of the Word, not the hearing. James 1:25 can be translated, ‘This man shall be prospered spiritually in his doing.’ Even studying this section in John’s Gospel can stir us emotionally or enlighten us intellectually; but it cannot bless us spiritually until we do what Jesus told us to do. This is the only way to lasting happiness.”

We get no credit, no blessings, no happiness from mere knowledge. We are only blessed and happy because of what we do with the knowledge that we have. The overwhelming majority of Christians have enough knowledge — more than enough knowledge. We don’t need to learn how to be holy. We just need to be holy.

We all ought to obey our Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. We all ought to be humble in our attitude and spirit. We all ought to strive to live a holy life. In so doing, we will find true happiness.

This poem by William D. Longstaff speaks to how we ought to take time to be holy.

Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord;
Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word.
Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,
Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;
Spend much time in secret, with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be;
Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

Take time to be holy, let Him be thy Guide;
And run not before Him, whatever betide.
In joy or in sorrow, still follow the Lord,
And, looking to Jesus, still trust in His Word.

Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul,
Each thought and each motive beneath His control.
Thus led by His Spirit to fountains of love,
Thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.

If you are ready to follow Jesus Christ in His example of humility and holiness (which is the first step to guaranteed happiness), I encourage you to start by making Him the Lord and Master of your life today by trusting him as saviour. Here is how:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. LISTEN: Neopagan Religions (Understanding World Religions #40 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte III
Daniel Whyte III

Our quote for today is from George Washington. He said, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.”

In this podcast, we are making our way through Garry R. Morgan’s book, “Understanding World Religions in 15 Minutes a Day.”

Our Understanding World Religions topic for today is, “Neopagan Religions”

“The Goddess is alive and magic is afoot.” Thus proclaimed an I-694 billboard in a Minneapolis suburb a few years ago, sponsored by the Goddess Committee, Northern Dawn Council, Covenant of the Goddess. The growth of Neopagan religions in North America and Europe has been one of the most significant expressions of new religious movements since 1950. Many today use the word pagan to refer to nonreligious people or those whose behavior is considered unacceptable, but Pagan actually is an umbrella term for the ancient religions of pre-Christian Europe. These did not cease to exist after most Europeans converted, at least nominally, to Christianity, but they did go underground and were often viewed with suspicion, as they frequently are today. Neopagan religions are a revival and repackaging of these belief systems with some contemporary additions.

Wicca is the best known of this large family of contemporary religious movements, though there are many different groups. Druidism, Celtic religions, As-a-tru, the Green Circle, and the Circle of Awen are a handful of the many examples. The variety makes generalizing difficult, but a few themes do characterize most.
