A five-hour hostage standoff in a Baltimore Burger King ended peacefully on Sunday when a rape suspect who had held four people captive, including a 7-year-old girl, surrendered peacefully, authorities said.
“He made the decision to do the right thing and that was not harm anyone,” T.J. Smith of the Baltimore Police Department said at news conference.
During a news conference Sunday afternoon while negotiations were ongoing, Smith said officers tried to conduct a traffic stop on the unnamed suspect around 11 a.m. to serve him an arrest warrant for an alleged rape that had occurred in the past 48 hours. A pursuit ensued until the suspect collided with another car, after which the suspect fled on foot into a Burger King, believed to be armed with a handgun.
