“7 Years” by Danish group Lukas Graham is one of the most popular songs in recent memory. It reached #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topped the UK singles chart for five weeks. I first heard this song myself when I was driving from Texas to Virginia for my daughter’s graduation and I was trying to stay awake and was flipping stations when I came across this song and was immediately fascinated with this young songwriter’s insight, understanding, and talent on loan from God.
The heart of the song (and the reason why it has resonated with so many people) is about a young man reflecting on his brief past life and looking forward decades into the future to old age. Looking at the ages of “7”, “11”, and “20”, Lukas Graham, remembers how his mother told him to make friends so he won’t be lonely, how his father told him to get a wife for the same reason, and how he began to “write songs and stories” as he sought for success and significance in life.
Then, the singer looks forward to the age of 30 when he would have achieved some measure of success, traveled around the world, become a father, but would still be “learning about life” while some of his friends are out “seeking glory.”
Finally, he looks at the age of “60” and wonders whether his perspective on life would have changed by then — would the world still be the place of possibilities that it was when he was young, or will he see it as a cold place? Either way, he hopes to have “a lot of children” who will come by and visit him once or twice a month and remind him that it’s still good to be alive.
The song embodies the wise practice of stepping back from the day-to-day and looking at one’s life as a whole: Where have you been? Where are you going? Where do you want to be in the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Unfortunately, many people never do this, and they arrive at age 60 or older and begin to wonder if they have spent their years wisely. More tragically, many people do not consider what comes after 60, or 70, or whatever age that is appointed for them to die.
As eternal beings, it is wise to consider that too, because the six or seven decades that we spend on this earth are a very small fraction when compared to eternity. Just as a wise person plans for the years and decades ahead, you can plan for eternity as well. Even if you gained success in this world, as Lukas Graham talks about in their song, none of it would matter if you cross from this life into the next only to realize you made the biggest mistake of your life. The Bible says in Matthew 16:26, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
God has provided a way for your soul to be saved and for your eternal future to be secure. This way is through His Son, Jesus Christ. The only way we can have a happy eternal future in Heaven is through Him; the alternative is the torment of eternity in Hell. Jesus Christ died on the cross for all of our sins, which are offensive to God, and which, unpaid for, will keep us out of Heaven. Because Jesus shed His blood on the cross, died in our place, and later rose from the dead, we do not have to go to Hell. If we trust Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we can go to Heaven to be with Him when we die.
If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior, here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him today.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
