Fresh off his Tony-winning run in the Broadway musical Hamilton, actor Daveed Diggs is joining Julia Roberts on the big screen.
Diggs, 34, has been cast in Wonder, the film adaptation of the best-selling novel by Raquel J. Palacio, opposite Roberts, Room breakout Jacob Tremblay, and Owen Wilson, EW has confirmed. The story follows 10-year-old Auggie Pullman (Tremblay), a boy born with a facial deformity who, after years of homeschooling, enrolls in a private prep school for the fifth grade.
Roberts and Wilson are to play his parents, and, as first reported by Deadline, Diggs is expected to play his English teacher, Mr. Browne. The film is being directed by Stephen Chbosky, who helmed 2012’s coming-of-age drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Friday night marks the last Hamilton curtain call for Diggs, who played the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson and won a Tony Award for his performance. Diggs is also on board for Andy Samberg’s doping mockumentary, Tour de Pharmacy, at HBO.
Wonder is set for an April 7, 2017 release.
