Millions have viewed the chilling video of the moments following Philando Castile’s fatal shooting by a Minnesota police officer during a traffic stop.
According to the victim’s girlfriend Diamond Reynolds, her decision to stream the gruesome incident via Facebook live video was done in response to a message from God.
“I was able to remain calm because I knew in the back of my mind if anything was to alarm that officer, he possibly could have took me and maybe even my daughter. And what made me record the live video was God telling me, ‘It’s your word over theirs,’ and I just wanted the justice,” she said in a sit-down interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.
A clearly shaken up Reynolds, who wept for nearly the entire Good Morning America interview, shared how she and her 4-year-old daughter, Dae-Anna, who was in the car with Castile when St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez opened fire on him, are coping.
“We’re holding up. I mean, every day is challenging, but with God and the support of everyone around America, we believe we can get through this,” she said, wiping away tears while seated next to her lawyer.
Since the video went live, sparking national protests and calls for justice, the lawyer for the officer issued a statement saying the use of deadly force had “nothing to do with race, and everything to do with the presence of a gun,” which Castile was licensed to carry.
And what is Reynolds’ response to that?
