4 Killed, At Least 60 Wounded in July 4 Weekend Violence in Chicago

At least 60 people were shot, four of them killed, in Chicago over the July 4 weekend despite a more officers on the streets trying to control the city’s violence.

At least 32 people were shot in the 15 hours between noon on Monday and 3 a.m. Tuesday, The Chicago Tribune reported. Two of the victims were a 5-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy who were outside playing with fireworks.

“I literally ran through every red light,” the girl’s cousin said after learning about the shooting. The boy and girl both needed surgery. The boy suffered a slightly more serious injury because the bullet shattered his ankle, the report said.

Most of the weekend shootings appeared to unfold in the early morning hours.
