Civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton gave a stirring seven-minute speech on Saturday (July 2) at Essence Festival 2016, in which he pointed out that the end of President Barack Obama’s current term of office will lead to the unprecedented situation of replacing the first black chief executive.
“We will leave New Orleans embarking on a voting rights and voting registration effort,” he said. “We’re going to register one million new voters to protect the legacy of this president.”
