Homegoing Service for Deacon and Military Veteran John H. Newsome Jr. to be Held on July 2nd

Deacon John H. Newsome Jr., 73, of Cottontail Dr., Watertown, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on June 25, 2016.

The Home Going Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2 at Sweet Haven Holy Church of God in Black River. A calling hour will precede the service from 10 a.m. to 11a.m. at the church.

Burial with military honors will follow the service at the Sanford Corners Cemetery.

Arrangements are with the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River.

Born on March 30, 1943 in South Hampton County, VA, son of John H. and Corine (Whitfield) Newsome Sr., he graduated from William Henry High School in Dover, Delaware in 1962.

He married Shirley A. Hopkins on December 31, 1966 at the Parsonage in Denton, MD.

Mr. Newsome entered the US Army in 1963 and served 27 years in the military as an Engineering Supervisor and Field Artillery Senior Sergeant. The couple was stationed at Fort Drum in 1987 where he continued his military career up until he retired as a First Sergeant on January 31, 1990. He received numerous medals including the Army Achievement Medal with one Silver Star and ten Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Republican of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Army Commendation Medal.

Following his retirement the couple resided in Watertown and he worked at the Watertown Post Office as a supervisor for ten years. He then worked on Fort Drum for six years as a production control manager before retiring.

He was an active member at Sweet Haven Holy Church of God where he became a Deacon and currently was the Chairman of Deacon Ministry for over twenty years; he enjoyed referring basketball and umpiring softball on Fort Drum for many years and woodworking.
