A lot of public restrooms in the city are going to have to remove their “Men” and “Women” signs in a few months.

The City Council’s Housing Committee voted 8-0 on Monday to require single-occupant public bathrooms to be gender neutral.

If approved by the full Council and by the mayor — which are both likely — the measure would transform public facilities for individual “Men” and “Women” into unisex bathrooms starting on Jan. 1.

“Most New Yorkers take their non-fettered access to bathrooms for granted. Yet every single day, transgender and gender non-conforming individuals must grapple with the fact that their choices may lead to harassment or worse,” said Councilman Daniel Dromm (D-Queens), the legislation’s prime sponsor.

“There’s an added bonus: Anyone looking for an unoccupied bathroom will now have more options.”
