An Aurora woman who fired warning shots at the gunman who killed her fiance and father of her two children is facing felony firearm charges.
Ashley Harrison, 26, of Aurora, was emotional Sunday as she stood before Cook County Judge Adam Donald Bourgeois Jr. on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
Prosecutors say Harrison was driving in the 200 block of West Root Street with her fiance, Garvin Whitmore, 27, around 5:20 p.m. Saturday when someone walked up and shot Whitmore in the head.
Harrison pulled a silver .357-caliber Magnum handgun that was in the car and fired several gunshots in the air, Assistant State’s Attorney Lesley Gool said.
Surveillance cameras from a nearby business caught Harrison on camera shooting into the air, Gool said.
“That sounds like self-defense to me,” Bourgeois said.
“What would you have her do? I mean, she chose the life to be out here with guys like that, that do that sort of thing,” he continued.
Bourgeois set Harrison’s bond at $250,000.
At the time of the shooting, Harrison and Whitmore were on their way to pick up Harrison’s aunt, Diana Davis, from National Louis University. Davis was on the phone with Whitmore when the she heard gunfire and the frantic screams of her niece.
