Florence police officers shut down the intersection of Cox Creek parkway and North Wood Ave where a police officer was shot by a man who was being chased and later shot himself in the Chisholm Road Church of Christ parking lot early Sunday morning.

The Florence police officer injured in a shooting early this morning has been released from the hospital, officials said.

Officer Brian Berry arrived at home this afternoon, officials said.

The suspect in the shooting of the officer died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, authorities said. The suspect was identified this afternoon as Mathew Hall McCravy, 22, of Florence.

Berry was flown to Huntsville Hospital. The officer was shot in the face, authorities said, but is expected to make a full recovery.

The officer was shot just after midnight at Cox Creek Parkway and Cloverdale Road. Berry was stopped at a traffic signal and the suspected shooter was in a turn lane, both headed west on Cox Creek Parkway. Police were investigating what led to the shooting.

After Berry was shot, police began looking for a black SUV. A vehicle matching the description was spotted just before 1 a.m. on Wright Drive and a short chase with officers ensued, according to reports.

The suspect drove east on Wright Drive, crossed Chisholm Road and drove straight into the parking lot of Chisholm Hills Church of Christ, north of Cox Creek Parkway. The suspect’s vehicle stopped after hitting a trailer containing camping equipment and other items belonging to a Boy Scout troop sponsored by the church.
