The only question left is the timing of the prophecy. Is John talking about the Roman Empire of the first century, or does he foresee a Roman Empire of the future? Remember, this chapter belongs to the section of “what must take place after these things.” John will ultimately tell us of the final conflict at Armageddon, of the fall of the “great city” which reigns over the kings of the earth, of the triumphal return of Christ, and of the defeat of the beast and the False Prophet and the binding of Satan.
There are only three legitimate options for the reasonable interpreter…
OCCUPY TILL I COME: We are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. This section is titled, “Watch” (Part 41) based on the parable of the foolish and wise virgins in Matthew 25:1-13. J.C. Ryle writes:
I exhort you to watch against doubts and unbelief as to the complete acceptance of your soul, if you are a believer in Christ Jesus. The Lord Jesus finished the work He came to do — do not tell Him that He did not. The Lord Jesus paid your debts in full — do not tell Him that you think He left you to pay part. The Lord Jesus promises eternal life to every sinner that comes to Him — do not tell Him, even while you are coming, that you think He lies. In Christ you are like Noah in the ark, and Lot in Zoar — nothing can harm you. The earth may be burned up with fire at the Lord’s appearing — but not a hair of your head shall perish. Doubt it not. Pray for more faith. Watch and pray!
