TEXT: John 6:60-65
60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?
62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.
This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 81.
A.W. Tozer said, “Put your name in the words of John 3:16 and say, ‘Lord, it is I. I’m the cause and reason why Thou didst on earth come to die.’ That kind of positive, personal faith and a personal Redeemer is what saves you. If you will just rush in there, you do not have to know all the theology and all the right words. You can say, ‘I am the one He came to die for.'”
After Jesus concludes His teaching on the Bread of Life, many of the Jews determine that what He is asking of them is too hard. They do not want to eat of the bread of life or drink of His blood that they might have eternal life. Some of them simply do not understand. Others simply do not want to submit to Jesus’ words. They do not like the idea of this God-man becoming a part of them and they becoming a part of Him.
We are even told, “Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?” As we have learned before, “hear” in this case means to obey also. The words, “hard saying,” not only mean difficult to understand, but restrictive or stringent. Jesus had been telling them that He was the only way to God, yet the Jews felt like they had their own way that had been working just fine — thank you very much. As John Calvin pointed out, “It was in their hearts, and not in the saying, that the harshness lay. For out of the word of God the reprobates are accustomed to form stones to dash themselves upon, and when, by their hardened obstinacy, they rush against Christ, they complain that his saying is harsh, which ought rather to have softened them.”
Who are these “disciples” who claimed that Jesus words were “hard”? These are not any of the twelve whom Jesus had called, but others from Galilee who had called themselves disciples of Christ. They were only willing to follow Jesus when He was doing things that they liked. As soon as He spoke of things that were difficult for them to accept, they did not want to be associated with Him.
The Bible says, “When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?” Jesus looks from the beginning of His mission on earth to its end. Previously, He had told them that He had come down from Heaven. Now, He asks, “If you witness Me ascending into Heaven will you believe then, or will that also offend you?” One might think that people would believe if they saw Jesus with their own eyes ascend to the Father, but Jesus knows that they would only twist what they saw and try to deny that it was real. (After all, at one point, the Jews accused Jesus of being able to cast out demons only because He Himself was empowered by the devil.)
Finally, Jesus points out the real reason why these people are unable to understand and accept His words. He says, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” God’s Spirit is that which gives life to believers. And, it is only through the Spirit, that people can understand and receive Jesus’ words.
The reason why the Jews are grumbling against Jesus is because they have resisted the work of the Spirit in their hearts. They have resisted the pulling, drawing power of God in their lives. If they would only submit to God, their hearts would be illuminated regarding the words that Jesus has been speaking to them.
Perhaps, you are struggling with the decision of whether or not to believe on Jesus. Perhaps, you think Jesus’ words are too “hard”. Maybe you think the way is too straight, too narrow for you to walk. Remember, just as A.W. Tozer said, you do not have to understand everything on your own. You do not have to take the leap of faith on your own. God’s Spirit is ready to help you if you will let Him. He wants to open your mind to the truth of what you are now — lost and on your way to Hell — and to the truth of what you can become with Christ — saved and given eternal life.
Dear friend, are you ready to take the step of opening your heart and mind to the Gospel? Are you ready to eat the Bread of Life and drink the Living Water? Are you ready to come to Jesus as Your Savior? Here is how you can make the decision to receive Him today.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
