For Barry, the upcoming biopic about young Barack Obama’s time at Columbia University, filmmakers have turned to someone who knows a thing or two about boyhood. EW has confirmed that Boyhood star Ellar Coltrane has joined the cast of Barry, along with fellow new addition Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton).
The movie, directed by Vikram Gandhi, will focus on Obama going to college in New York City. As previously announced, Devon Terrell will star as the future president himself, with The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy costarring in an unidentified role. No word yet on who Coltrane and Mitchell will play. Variety was the first to report the news.
Gandhi is mostly known for directing documentaries, such as Kumare and HBO’s Vice series. The screenplay was written by Go the F— To Sleep author Adam Mansbach.
As films about Barack Obama go, Barry follows on the heels of Southside With You, a film about a young Barack’s first date with future wife Michelle in 1989. That one debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival before getting picked up by Miramax.
