TEXT: John 6:32-35
32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.
This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 74.
Charles Spurgeon said, “Faith in Christ is simply and truly described as coming to him. It is not an acrobatic feat; it is simply a coming to Christ. It is not an exercise of profound mental faculties; it is coming to Christ. A child comes to his mother, a blind man comes to his home, even an animal comes to his master. Coming is a very simple action indeed; it seems to have only two things about it, one is, to come away from something, and the other is, to come to something.”
The Jews in this passage stumbled at the same terminology that the Samaritan woman stumbled at. After Jesus initially told them about the bread of life, they still thought that He was talking about physical bread. The Samaritan woman said, ‘Lord, give me this living water that I will no longer have to come to the well and draw.’ The Jews here say, ‘Lord evermore give us this bread’; that is, ‘Give us this bread of life that we might have it always — an endless supply.’ They thought that Jesus was guaranteeing a permanent source of this food that was essential to first century life.
Seeing that they are still having a hard time grasping this concept, Jesus tells them plainly, ‘I am the bread of life.’ He taps in to a universal human desire for something more than just food and drink and physical satisfaction. Even though many suppress it and settle for less, all people have a desire for something more.
Now that the Jews see that Jesus is talking about Himself, they will naturally wonder, ‘How can I partake of this Bread that gives life?’ Jesus again addresses this concern with a plain statement, “He that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” It is not, ‘He that receiveth what I can give him’ as the Jews had received their miraculous meal the day before. It is not, ‘He that is awed by a wonderful miracle.’ It is, ‘HE (or SHE) that cometh to ME.’ This is a personal interaction between Jesus and the individual.
The Greek word for “cometh” means just that — to come. It is also defined as “to come forth or to come from one place to another.” If a person is to partake of the bread of life, he or she must leave the place where they are now and go someplace else — a place where Jesus is.
As this person comes, they must also believe. The word believe means “to think to be true, to be persuaded of, to place confidence in, to have faith in.” The process of coming involves the heart, but all of these words related to believing engage the intellect — thinking, persuasion, confidence, faith. Jesus spent most of His time, as He does in this chapter, trying to convince people to believe. Remember the long conversations He had with Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman. He could have just wowed them with miracles, but He sat down and reasoned with them regarding eternal life. That is what He is doing with the Jews here. In this chapter, the miraculous feeding of the 5,000 takes up only 13 verses, but the teaching on the Bread that gives life takes up 65 verses. Jesus wants these people to have a solid foundation so they can come and believe.
When they come and believe, He promises that they will never hunger nor thirst again. They will have found that ‘something more’ that they have been searching for. They will have eaten of the bread that gives life and drunk of the living water. All their desires will be satisfied, not because Jesus will give them everything they want, but because, in Jesus, they will find everything they ever needed and all the things that matter most.
Are you ready to come and believe in Jesus Christ today? He is the only source of eternal life and the source of fulfillment in this life. And all you have to do is come and believe. Here is how:
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
