TEXT: John 6:22-27

22 The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;

23 (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)

24 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.

25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.

This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”

This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 71.

David Guzik said, “Jesus made a contrast between material things and spiritual things. It is almost universally true that people are more attracted to material things than spiritual things. A sign that says free money and free food will get a bigger crowd than one that says spiritual fulfillment and eternal life.”

The day after Jesus feeds the 5,000 and walks on the water to his disciples, we are told that the people whom Jesus had fed begin to wonder where He has gone. The text tells us that they had seen Jesus telling His disciples to get into a boat and go back to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, however, Jesus had remained. Now that a new day has dawned, the people realize that Jesus is no longer with them. What they don’t know is that Jesus left them during the night and walked on the water to meet His disciples in the middle of the Sea and then miraculously transported them to the opposite shore.

The Bible then tells us, “When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.” When they arrived on the other shore, they asked, “Rabbi, when camest thou thither?” These were the same people who wanted to make Jesus their king. They got concerned when Jesus made Himself scarce after the miraculous meal and then disappeared completely by the following morning.

Jesus, instead of answering their question, reveals their true intentions. He says, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.” He basically tells them, “I gave you dinner yesterday, and now you come to me seeking breakfast.’ The people didn’t really love Jesus; they just loved what He had done for them, and they wanted Him to keep on doing such things on their behalf. Even though they had been taught from a young age to expect the Messiah, now that the Messiah was here, they only desired for Him to fulfill their material needs.

In response, Jesus tells them, “Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you.” These Jews who came looking for Jesus expended a lot of energy to get to him — some rowed across the Sea in boats, others walked around the Sea. They did this because they desired physical sustenance from Jesus.

By telling them to labour for the “meat which endureth unto everlasting life,” Jesus is saying that they should be just as eager, just as earnest to receive the spiritual gift that he has to offer. He is not telling them that they have to work for it; He is telling them that they should have an even greater desire to receive it. As Jesus said to another crowd of Jews, “Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?”

The false teaching of the prosperity gospel reduces the real Gospel to this — concern about food, housing, and clothes. John Piper said, “If you entice people with wealth, ease, [and] health, you will attract people. You can grow a huge church that way. But Christ will not be seen in His glory and the Christian life will not be seen as the calvary road that it is.”

People today are far more concerned about their physical needs than their spiritual needs. Millions spend time, money, and energy to ensure that their physical needs are taken care of but take no thought of their spiritual life and their eternal destination. Jesus says that we should expend the same energy to grab hold of spiritual truths and eternal life. Jesus wants us to seek Him not just for the fulfillment of our physical desires but for the provision of spiritual necessities.

You have heard of Jesus. You know who He is. You have heard other people’s testimonies of what He has done for them. Are you seeking Jesus for the right reasons? Are you ready to receive eternal life and the many spiritual blessings that He has to offer you? If you want to receive Jesus Christ as your Savior today, here is how.

John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please e-mail me at and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.
