Dr. Ben Carson caused some controversy recently when he said in an interview that President Obama was “raised white.”

“He’s an ‘African’ American. He was, you know, raised white,” the retired neurosurgeon said on Politico’s “Off Message” podcast. “So, for him to, you know, claim that, you know, he identifies with the experience of black Americans, I think, is a bit of a stretch.”

Carson told On the Record that he was simply pointing out that Obama’s upbringing — being raised by two white grandparents in Hawaii, spending formative years with his white mother in Indonesia, and attending private schools — was not typical of most black Americans.

“It really is not a typical black experience. That’s what I was saying,” Carson said.

Carson said that other media outlets tried to spin his statement.

“The other media tried to take that and say that I was saying that there’s something wrong with anybody who isn’t brought up black, or that racism is rampant and it’s causing problems.

“These are all their interpretations. This is the narrative they want to present, and it’s so typical. I would think people would be tired of it by now.”
