TEXT: John 5:5-9
5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents and politicians but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey God’s Great Commission and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.
This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As the hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 48.
Bob Kellemen said, “There is no human experience which cannot be put on the anvil of a lively relationship with God and man, and battered into a meaningful shape.”
We have already seen the sick man’s response to Jesus’ question, “Wilt thou be made whole?” Based on his limited view of the situation, the man could see no way of being healed of his illness. He was focused on the water in the Pool, and had already determined that he could not get in the Pool fast enough to be healed.
However, he had not factored in Jesus being the Messiah, God in the flesh, the great miracle-worker that everyone seemed to be talking about. He was not even thinking along the lines of a miracle. But Jesus was. Brushing aside the sick man’s complaints, Jesus tells him, “Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.” Notice here that Jesus did not get down and touch the man’s legs in order to heal them. He didn’t give him some kind of medicine. He simply commanded the man to act. Just as we saw in the account of the nobleman and his sick son, the power is in God’s will and Jesus’ words.
Jesus first told the man to do what he had been unable to do for the past 38 years. He said, ‘Rise. Get up from your bed.’ Oddly, this man who had so many complaints before had nothing to say now. I think he was so stunned that, unlike other sympathetic people whom he had encountered, Jesus did not get into his illness. Jesus, who had authority over all sickness and disease, acted as if the disease didn’t even exist. The sick man’s will evaporated as his body submitted to the will of its Maker. The sick man chose to believe God rather than cling to his old standards of living. He got up! Dr. John Walvoord and Dr. Roy B. Zuck state, “God’s supernatural power was evident in the man’s instantaneous cure. He picked up his mat and walked. Muscles long atrophied were completely restored. Isaiah prophesied that in the days of the Messiah the lame would ‘leap like a deer.’ Here in Jerusalem was a public sign that the Messiah had come.”
Next, Jesus told him, “Take up thy bed.” This was a sign of total life change on the part of the sick man. For nearly four decades, he had lain on his mat; now Jesus was telling him to pick up his mat. This man’s definition of life was based on being helpless; now Jesus had helped him and given him the ability and will to help himself. Jesus wanted to make it clear to this man that he was not going back to his old lifestyle. He had been totally changed. No longer would he lay on a mat waiting for the water to be stirred. He was a new man now.
This is important for us today because many who make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ are slow to see changes in their lives. They are saved, yes, but after a day or a week of euphoria, they slip right back into their old lifestyles. The key is that they must stop living as they used to live. It would be insane for this healed man to continue laying on his mat by the Pool of Bethesda. He had to cut all ties to that lifestyle. When you accept Jesus Christ into your heart, you will likely have to do the same. There are some people whom you cannot hang around anymore; there are some places you cannot go anymore; and there are some things you cannot do anymore.
That is why Jesus tells this man to “Walk!” ‘Don’t stand around with all the other sick people. You’re healed!’ If Jesus gave this man the power to stand up, to pick up his bed, then Jesus could give this man the power to walk away from his old life and into his new life.
That very same power is offered to you. Obviously, you cannot save yourself; you cannot heal yourself; you cannot fix yourself. You have tried and failed. You must trust Jesus to save you. It is His power that will do the work in you. The sick man did not do anything to heal himself; all he did was believe that he could do what Jesus told him to do and he did. Jesus tells you today, is “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
You can do that right now. You can come to Jesus. Here is how.
First, acknowledge that you are sin-sick and that you need a Saviour, for the Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him.
The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
