Léonce Crump, Jr., is the lead pastor of Renovation Church in what he calls “the beautiful, broken heart of downtown Atlanta.” Through trial and a lot of errors, Crump has learned important lessons on what it means to do ministry in a city’s urban core and what it means to follow a calling to transform a neighborhood.
Crump, a church planter and board member of Acts 29, has captured the most critical lessons about ministry in urban centers desperate for renewal in Renovate: Changing Who You Are By Loving Where You Are (Feb. 16, 2016/Multnomah). Crump had three failed church plants in Atlanta before he had the insight: “You can’t make a plan for people you don’t know.”
Crump is available to discuss the theological and practical issues the Church confronts when we take the lead towards cultural renewal. These are issues that matter for ministry, domestically or missions abroad, such as:
- Transience and the problem of not investing completely in a community
- Knowing a community’s history and its story instead of imposing a template “ministry plan”
- Gentrification and how the church’s best efforts can harm the people it is trying to reach
- Responsibilities of the Church in the cultural renewal movement
“I hope to leave you with a renewed sense of your ability to influence and shape culture, your ability and calling to renew this world and promote human flourishing for God’s glory and the common good,” says Crump.
Renovate offers boots on the ground insights for anyone who feels the tug to make a difference in the world and believes the Gospel can radically transform a neighborhood. Crump’s teaching is deep, thought-provoking and unafraid to address issues of race and socio-economics.
