3. U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Friday that the United States is not looking for conflict with China but the steps China is taking in the South China Sea are selfisolating and prompting other countries to seek help from Washington.
4. The Israel Defense Forces on Wednesday announced the conclusion of a major twoweek drill on the northern border, which for the first time simulated concurrent wars on the Lebanese and Syrian fronts.
5. Senior Saudi and Iranian figures clashed behind closed doors at a private meeting convened by the World Economic Forum in Davos this week to try to promote peace in Syria.
