TEXT: Revelation 20:1-3

1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Armageddon: What Happens to Satan — The Future Wars of the Nations (Part 10)

Last week, as we talked about the outcome of the battle of Armageddon, we saw what happened to two of the members of the satanic trinity — the Antichrist and the False Prophet. They were bound and thrown into the Lake of Fire. However, we did not deal with Satan himself. He was the instigator behind this last attempt to defy God and prevent the return of Jesus Christ. So, what happens to him? Our passage for today tells us.

John says, “I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years…” Notice a few things about this scene.

First, we have a nondescript angel. Unlike other descriptions of angels in Revelation, he is not a mighty angel, or an archangel, or an angel standing in the sun. He is just an angel come down from Heaven to deal with the devil. Neither God nor Jesus go to deal with Satan. An angel is sent to handle the world’s greatest threat. David Guzik said, “This is a dramatic declaration that Satan is not God’s opposite or equal; and that God could easily stop Satan’s activity at any time. Yet God allows Satan to continue, because even in his evil, he indirectly serves the purposes of God.” This tells us that God has been in control all along.

Now, notice the names ascribed to Satan. Just in case there is any doubt about who is being described here, he is called “the dragon, that old serpent, the Devil, and Satan.”

The term “dragon” describes his fierce nature. As the dragon, he raged against the people of God, Jews and Christians, and sought to destroy them. He is still seeking to destroy us today. This name for Satan only appears in the book of Revelation. During the last days, the devil’s anger and ferocity will be put on full display because he knows he is running out of time. He will desperately try to destroy God’s people and prevent the return of Christ. Revelation 12:12 says,” Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” After Armageddon, Satan’s ability to cause pain, suffering, and chaos on earth will end.

The name “serpent” describes his beguiling nature. It is as a serpent that he tempted Eve and Adam in the Garden and caused them to fall. In the ancient near east, the serpent was thought of as cunning and wise. Even though Satan is evil, he and his agenda can appear attractive in order to deceive humans. Satan has been doing that almost since the beginning of time, but after Armageddon, he will be revealed for what he is and his deceptions will end.

The name “devil” describes his slanderous and accusatory activity. The Bible tells us that he is called the “accuser of the brethren.” The devil accuses us of sins before God in an effort to get Him to turn against us. However, because of the blood of Jesus, all our sins have been washed away, and God dismisses the devil’s accusations against us. Still, today, the devil also tries to sow discord between believers by gossip, slander, and false accusations. Unfortunately, we are not as willing to forgive and forget as God is, and sometimes, we let Satan divide us against each other when we should be working together for the glory of God. However, after Armageddon, the devil’s slanderous activity against God’s people will end.

The name “Satan” describes the devil’s adversarial nature. The word literally means “adversary (one who opposes another in purpose or act).” Being an adversary is exactly what the devil will be doing when Jesus returns. All throughout history, he has opposed God and tried to thwart God’s plans — with humanity in the beginning, with the Jews in the Old Testament, and with the church in the New Testament. But Armageddon will put an end to all that.

Back in the passage, we are told that this angel lays hold on the devil and “casts him into the bottomless pit, and shuts him up, and sets a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more.” John goes to great lengths to describe how the devil is imprisoned. He is cast away, he is shut up, and a seal is set upon him so that he can deceive the world no more. What a glorious time that will be for the earth — when there is no satanic influence in the world.

Now, we don’t know where the bottomless pit is located, but many Bible scholars have concluded that it is in the middle of the earth. The Greek word for bottomless is “abyssos” which literally means “without depth.” Once you are in the middle of the earth, you can’t go any deeper. As Dr. Henry Morris says, “every boundary would be a ceiling.”

Wherever the devil is imprisoned, he will be unable to deceive or harm anyone on earth. He will be completely restrained. However, as John writes, this will only last “till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”

The great truth for us today, as we contend with the dragon, the old serpent, the devil, and Satan, is that he is not all-powerful — far from it. We do not have to give in to temptation, evil, and sin. Nor do we have to lose hope in dark times. God is always in control, and one day soon, he will put an end to Satan’s schemes.

If you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to share with you how you can trust Him for salvation so that you can be ready for His return.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.
