Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James and his marketing group, LRMR, have a business relationship with Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, but James is worried about Manziel the person.
“I’m more concerned with him individually,” James said Wednesday morning as the Cavs prepared to play the Washington Wizards later that evening.
LRMR, led by James’ longtime friend and business partner Maverick Carter, handles Manziel’s marketing opportunities.
Manziel, who missed the Browns’ season finale while in the NFL’s concussion protocol program, spent Saturday dining and gambling at Las Vegas’s Planet Hollywood casino, USA TODAY Sports reported.
“I don’t know all the details on it. I haven’t been all up on it, but I’ve heard a little bit of it,” James said. “It’s a distraction not only for himself but for everyone that’s around him, including family, people that represent him. He’ll figure it out at some point. We all do.”
Manziel’s off-field antics – partying and a public argument with his girlfriend on the shoulder of an Ohio highway – have been a problem for the second-year quarterback. Manziel also spent time in rebab early last year.
Manziel, 23, played in nine games (six starts) this season and threw 1,500 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions and completed 57.8% of his passes.
