John 1:14: “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
Today, I am continuing the Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, which is aimed at bringing lost souls to Jesus Christ and reminding Christians, in this election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — preaching the Gospel to every creature and not getting caught up in the presidential campaign.
One of Jesus’ names is “Emmanuel”, meaning God with us. Our passage for today shed light on exactly what that name means.
1. In Jesus, God became flesh. John says, “The Word was made flesh…” The Jews of that day had a hard time believing that the God they worshipped could take on human flesh. In fact, most people probably have a hard time believing that that is even possible. But, that is what happened when Jesus came down. He took on human flesh. Merrill C. Tenney said, “Christ entered into a new dimension of existence through the gateway of human birth and took up his residence among men.” The beautiful thing about this is that, as the song says, “Jesus knows all about our struggles.” He knows every pain, every heartache, every temptation, every emotion that we have ever felt. He knows it because he was once just like us. He was God in the flesh.
2. In Jesus, God dwelled among us. John says, “and he dwelt among us.” When Jesus came down, he could have easily set himself up as a king. In fact, once the people witnessed the amazing miracles that he could perform — especially feeding thousands of people in the blink of an eye — the Bible tells us that they tried to make him king. But Jesus never made himself more important than the rest of us. He was a carpenter’s son born into a family of no great means. Jesus said that he “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Immanuel, God with us, draws near to us in our brokenness, our sin, our feebleness, our sickness, and our death. Charles Spurgeon said, “If God has come to dwell among men by the Word made flesh let us pitch our tents around this central tabernacle; do not let us live as if God were a long way off.”
3. Despite becoming flesh and dwelling with men, Jesus was still fully God. John tells his readers that “we [him and the other apostles] beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” They knew that Jesus could only be the Son of God. The Greek word used for “beheld” is stronger than the words “saw” or “looked.” John is saying that he and the other disciples carefully studied Jesus’ nature and they concluded that he was “the only begotten” son of God. Although he was fully man, he remained fully God. He never stooped into sin, but showed us how to live a perfect life in communion with God. But because we cannot live a perfect life on our own, because we have already sinned and made mistakes, Jesus came to be our perfect sacrifice — a once for all atonement for our sins and the offenses that we have committed against God.
Because of Jesus, you never have to worry about God not accepting you because of your sins. Jesus came — he became like you — so you do not have to suffer the punishment that you deserve. The question is: Will you accept his sacrifice? Please listen as I share how you can do that today
First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Please understand that because of your sins, you deserve eternal punishment in hell. Romans 6:23 says “the wages of sin is death…This is both physical death and spiritual death in hell. That is the bad news.
But here is the good news. John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
