The Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Mets 7-2 in 12 innings to win the 2015 World Series championship.
Here’s an inning-by-inning recap of how it unfolded:
12th inning – Royals plate five runs, a World Series record for an extra inning. Christian Colon’s RBI single breaks the tie, Alcides Escobar adds an RBI double and Lorenzo Cain breaks it open with a three-run double. Wade Davis closes it out in the bottom half, and the Kansas City Royals are the 2015 World Series champions. Royals 7, Mets 2, final.
11th inning – Eric Hosmer singles with two outs and then steals second, but Jon Niese escapes. Luke Hochevar walks Daniel Murphy with two outs, but Mets don’t score either. Royals 2, Mets 2.
10th inning – Both teams go down in order. To the 11th. Royals 2, Mets 2.
9th inning – Matt Harvey comes back out for the ninth and issues a leadoff walk to Lorenzo Cain, who steals second and then scores on Eric Hosmer’s double. Jeurys Familia relieves. Mike Moustakas grounds out, sending Hosmer to third. Next, Salvador Perez hits a groundball to third, and Hosmer races home when David Wright throws to first. Mets first baseman Lucas Duda’s throw to the plate is wild, and Hosmer scores the tying run. Kelvin Herrera retires the side in order in the bottom half, and we go to extra innings. Royals 2, Mets 2.
8th inning – Another perfect inning for Matt Harvey. Mets go down in order (all strikeouts) against Kelvin Herrera. Mets 2, Royals 0.
7th inning – Royals waste a leadoff single by Mike Moustakas. Mets, now facing reliever Kelvin Herrera, waste a leadoff single by Michael Conforto. Mets 2, Royals 0.
6th inning – Royals get a one-out single from Ben Zobrist but nothing else. Mets load the bases with none out and get one run on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Duda.Mets 2, Royals 0.
5th inning – Matt Harvey pitches around a one-out walk to Alex Gordon, striking out the other three batters he faces. He has eight strikeouts through five innings. In the bottom of the frame, Edinson Volquez pitches around a leadoff walk to Lucas Duda. Mets 1, Royals 0.
4th inning – Mets ace Matt Harvey strikes out the side. New York gets a one-out walk to Daniel Murphy, but Yoenis Cespedes grounds into a double play. Mets 1, Royals 0.
3rd inning – The pitcher, Edinson Volquez, leads off with a single for the Royals, but he’s erased on a double play. In the bottom half, he retires the Mets 1-2-3.Mets 1, Royals 0.
2nd inning – Royals get a runner thanks to an error by third baseman David Wright. Mets get a runner on a walk to Lucas Duda. Neither team scores. Mets 1, Royals 0.
1st inning – Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain hits a two-out single against Matt Harvey, who then strikes out Eric Hosmer. In the bottom half, the Mets get a leadoff home run from Curtis Granderson, but Edinson Volquez retires the next three batters. Mets 1, Royals 0.
