TEXT: Revelation 18:20-24

20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.

21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;

23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

The Coming Antichrist World System (Part 5)

Today, we are going to continue looking at the destruction of the antichrist world religious system which will be coupled with a materialistic economic system during the end times. As you will recall from our previous message, the world will be in an uproar over the fall of the Babylonian economic entity which will make it possible for many to live lavishly even as the world will be going through the darkest days it has ever seen. This idolatrous world system will ultimately be wiped out by the judgment of God, and all those who trusted in it — even some Christians, as this chapter indicates — will suffer great loss.

To provide some perspective on the verses we just read from Revelation 18, please listen to the following from Dr. John Walvoord and Dr. Roy Zuck. They said, “The final and violent destruction of the city is compared to throwing a large millstone into the sea. The lament follows that those who once characterized the city — harpists and musicians, flute players and trumpeters, and workmen of any trade — will not be seen in the city again. Nor will there be light or the joy of weddings. The reason for her judgment is that by her [“sorcery”] all the nations were led astray from God, and she was guilty of murdering prophets and saints.

“The question remains as to what city is in view here. A common view is that it refers to the city of Rome, because of the prominence of Rome as the seat of the Roman Catholic Church and the capital of the ancient Roman Empire. Some find confirmation of this in the fact that the kings and sea merchants will be able to see the smoke of the burning of the city.

“Other evidence seems to point to the fact that it is Babylon itself, located on the Euphrates River, which in the end time will be converted into a ship-bearing river. Bible expositors, however, continue to be divided on this question.

“The events of chapter 17 will be fulfilled at the midpoint of the seven years, whereas the events of chapter 18 will occur at the end of the seven years, immediately before the second coming of Christ. The destruction of the city of Babylon is the final blow to the times of the Gentiles, which began when the Babylonian army attacked Jerusalem in 605 B.C.”

Notice the words directed to God’s people during the destruction of Babylon: “Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.” One of the reasons why Babylon is judged so harshly is because of her persecution of God’s people. Verse 24 tells us that in Babylon “was found the blood of prophets, and of saints.” Because of the evangelistic outreach of the 144,000 Jews during the end times, there will be many who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and who will refuse to live by the antichrist world system. They will refuse to go along to get along. And many of them will be imprisoned and killed for their faith.

In Revelation chapter 6, John is shown a vision of Christian martyrs around the throne of God. The Bible says, “They cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?” When Babylon falls, God’s people — on earth and in heaven — will rejoice, not over the death and destruction, but because justice has been carried out and God’s righteousness has been vindicated. Dr. Ed Hindson said, “While the merchants of the earth weep over Babylon’s destruction, believers are told to rejoice over it. God has no mercy for this evil system that has always persecuted true believers. He shows no mercy and spares no unrepentant soul. So thorough is His punishment that no one can stand before it. It is His final and irrevocable expression of wrath, and it nearly destroys the whole planet.”

Turning back to the narrative of Babylon’s judgment, we see an angel ‘take up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.’ The angel’s action emphasizes the utter finality of this judgement. No more will the world be vexed by the false religion and sinful materialism represented by the Babylonian whore and the antichrist world system.

Verse 23 tells us that the Babylonian world system deceives the nations by “sorceries.” The Greek word for “sorceries” is “phar-ma-kia” from which the English word “pharmacy” is derived. It refers to the making and administering of drugs. The Babylonian antichrist spirit is deceptive and addictive. People will buy into it like some people buy drugs. They will experience a “high” from a lifestyle of pleasure and sin, and they will keep coming back for more.

The spirit of Babylon has risen again and again throughout history — at the Tower of Babel, in the ancient Babylonian empire, in the Roman Empire, and in the Roman Catholic Church. It is present in the world today and it will rise again in the near future. Each time, the Babylonian system has come to ruin. The destruction described in Revelation 17 and 18 show that it will be destroyed never to rise again, and those who gave themselves willingly to this system will be destroyed with it.

If you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to share with you how you can trust Him for salvation so that you can be ready for His return.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
