First Black Police Officer Sworn In in Clarksville, Indiana

One of Clarksville’s newest police officers is making history: Demetrius Latham Jr. is the city’s first African-American officer.

He and two other officers were sworn in Monday evening at the Clarksville Town Council meeting.

“I think it’s a very big step, not really for our department because we are very progressive; we do have a very diverse work group. But just for the face and for the community, that way they know there’s somebody here that represents them,” Latham said.

Officers John Smith and Chris Bartley were also sworn in.

The three must go through the police academy before starting their patrols.
