This podcast is about the negative side of eternal life. When it comes to what happens after death, people love to talk about Heaven and the wonderful benefits of eternity with God. However, there is less talk about the negative side of eternal life. This podcast will explore what the Bible says about Hell and the eternal damnation of those who die without Christ.
The Bible says in Matthew 25:41: “Then shall he [Jesus] say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”
The featured quote for this episode is from Thomas Watson. He said, “Eternity is a sea without bottom and banks. After millions of years, there is not one minute in eternity wasted; and the damned must be ever burning, but never consuming, always dying, but never dead. ‘They shall seek death, but shall not find it.’”
Our topic for today is “The Final State of the Wicked” from the book, “Christian Theology” by Millard J. Erickson.
Final State of the Wicked
Just as in the past, the question of the future state of the wicked has created a considerable amount of controversy in our day. The doctrine of an everlasting punishment appears to some to be an outmoded or sub-Christian view. It, together with angels and demons, is often one of the first topics of Christian belief to be demythologized. Part of the problem stems from what appears to be a tension between the love of God, a cardinal characteristic of God’s nature, and his judgment. Yet, however we regard the doctrine of everlasting punishment, it is clearly taught in Scripture. The Bible employs several images to depict the future state of the unrighteous.
Jesus said, “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” He likewise described their state as outer darkness: “But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
The final condition of the wicked is also spoken of as eternal punishment, torment, the bottomless pit, the wrath of God, second death, eternal destruction and exclusion from the face of the Lord.
