What do you do when you’ve just suffered a heartbreaking loss in the U.S. Open and booted a historic bid for the Grand Slam in tennis?’
If you’re the world’s No. 1 player, you strut your stuff at New York Fashion Week a few days later with a runway show of your Serena Williams’ HSN Signature Statement Collection for fall.
“I was really, really bummed out,” Williams, 33, said of her shocking semifinal loss on Friday to Italy’s Roberta Vinci.
“I played the best I can play and she’s never played better,” Williams told USA TODAY in a sit-down chat before her show Tuesday afternoon. “She just happened to bring her best game and there was nothing I could have done about it that day.”
So what has she been doing since Friday?
“Sulking. You know, the usual Serena,” she said with a laugh. “But honestly, working on this show has really been a blessing because I’ve just been doing hair and makeup and nails and things you don’t even think about. I worked on the music, which has been really, really cool. It’s been keeping me busy and keeping me happy because I love fashion. Everyone knows I love fashion, so it’s been really great.”
We couldn’t help but ask if rapper Drake, her rumored boyfriend, would show up “courtside,” as he did for her semifinal.
“We’ll have to wait and see, won’t we?” she teased. “I know Anna’s coming.”
