5.3 Earthquake Rattles Tokyo

A strong earthquake has rattled the Tokyo area, knocking pictures and books from shelves, but it was not expected to cause any tsunami or major damage.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says the magnitude 5.3 quake, which struck just before 6 a.m. local time Saturday, was centered 70 kilometers (43 miles) under the western suburb of Chofu.

It says the quake could cause landslides given recent heavy rains, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
