Welcome to episode #24 of The Theology on Homosexuality podcast and the Torch Leadership Foundation Institute’s “Hill, Lutzer, McKissic Lecture Series.” This Lecture Series is in honor of E.V. Hill, Erwin Lutzer, and Dwight McKissic for standing for God, truth and righteousness down through the years without compromise. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International. This podcast was created primarily to inform the Christian church about why it must stand against homosexuality, homosexual marriage, homosexual parenting, and the homosexual agenda. The biblical portrait of marriage, family and sexuality has sadly come under attack in our society and it is time for the church to stand up and to educate our culture about the dangers of same-sex marriage and the same-sex agenda while at the same time to promote God’s idea of marriage between one man and one woman, God’s view of the family structure, and God’s view of sexuality as being permissible and pleasurable within the safety and sanctity of marriage. The normalization of homosexuality and everything that pertains to it is probably the greatest danger facing our world today. Thus, it is imperative that the body of Christ choose to stop ignoring this prevailing issue and stand up for what God says on this matter before it completely destroys our country. This podcast is designed to equip pastors, church leaders, and Christians everywhere to take a firm stand for God against homosexuality and the homosexual agenda, in the spirit of love, grace and truth, so that we will not be responsible for allowing this nation to implode on our watch.
Our Theology on Homosexuality passage from the Word of God today is Jude 1:7. It reads, “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”
Allow me to share with you some important points regarding this passage from the “Bible Knowledge Commentary” by John F. Walvoord and Roy B. Zuck:
Jude’s illustration of Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns serves as a dreadful example of what happens to those who turn from God to follow their own lustful natures. The fate of the unbelievers in those two cities foreshadows the fate of those who deny God’s truth and ignore His warnings. The punishment by fire on the perverse inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah illustrates the eternal fire of hell, which will be experienced by false teachers.
Our Theology on Homosexuality quotes today are from Dwight McKissic and C.H. Spurgeon:
Dwight McKissic said, “There is one major personality and three-dimensional system of government that has not yet signed off on the sociological people group in America [called] Gay Americans. The one major personality who has not signed off on, or endorsed Michael Sam’s admitted sexual proclivities, is the One who created him—God Almighty. The three-dimensional form of government that has not approved of same-sex relationships and homosexuality is The Trinitarian Enterprise. Until God Almighty and The Trinitarian Enterprise change their position on this issue, there is a remnant of us who refuse to change also.”
C.H. Spurgeon said, “Shall the bestial vice of which Sodom was guilty never be checked? Why, if this should spread amongst the sons of men, it would bring in its infernal train ten thousand times more damage than the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The sin itself is infinitely worse than the fire which burned it up.”
Our Theology on Homosexuality topic is titled “We Must Resist the Pressure” part 2 from “The Truth About Same-Sex Marriage: 6 Things You Need to Know About What’s Really at Stake” by pastor Erwin Lutzer. And, I want to remind you to take advantage of our special offer. Dr. Erwin Lutzer continues with the following…
[The second argument that the homosexual community proposes is that] “HOMOSEXUALITY CANNOT BE CHANGED”
This, perhaps, is the crux of the debate—for if homosexuals cannot change, so the argument goes, then it would be the worst sort of coldheartedness to deny them the happiness and fulfillment that the rest of us enjoy. And again, more and more good church people are listening and wondering…
So can homosexuals change?
There is plenty of evidence to suggest that the answer is yes, given the thousands of former homosexuals who give testimony that they have been changed. Organizations such as Exodus International have for years shared real-life testimonies of those who have left the lifestyle and have even had their desires transformed, and are now living in heterosexual marriage.
Even Dr. Robert Spitzer, one of the activists who was responsible for pressuring the American Psychiatric Association to strike homosexuality off the psychiatric list of disorders, has been convinced that homosexuality is not a permanent trait. After conducting research on the matter, Spitzer said, “Like most psychiatrists, I thought that homosexual behavior could be resisted—but that no one could really change their sexual orientation. I now believe that’s untrue—some people can and do change.”
Many gays, however, routinely dismiss these accounts out of hand, saying that ex-gay people were never “truly” homosexual — bolstering their argument that change is both impossible and undesirable. Even the very idea that one would want to change is seen as a denial of one’s fundamental personhood—thus the chasm between those who claim deliverance and those who insist such claims are spurious.
My purpose is not to evaluate the evidence, but rather to ask this question: Even if someone finds that he or she cannot change to heterosexual desires, does this justify living the homosexual lifestyle? Anyone acquainted with the New Testament has read Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
Several important points must be made about this passage: First, that all the sexual sins that we have in our culture were rampant in ancient Corinth; also present were the contemporary sins of slander, thievery, and greed. Second, we learn that the gospel changed these people. A gospel that does not change the basic aspirations of the human heart is no gospel at all.
However, is Paul saying that homosexuals can be changed into heterosexuals? He does not say that Christ took these people who lived the homosexual lifestyle and transformed their sexual desires so that now they could be happily married. He simply says, “And that is what some of you were.” And now they are washed, sanctified, and justified. What Paul might have meant was that these homosexuals now lived their lives in the power of the Holy Spirit and were committed to a life of chastity.
In the same letter, Paul discusses marriage, but also singleness, which he holds in high regard. He discusses various situations in which people find themselves, arguing that the married should stay married, but the singles should be free to stay single. At the end of a rather lengthy discussion, he concludes, “So then, he who marries the virgin does right, but he who does not marry her does even better.” Paul himself, it is believed, never married. He did not deem singleness as a lifestyle to which one is condemned, but rather a unique opportunity to serve the Lord.
As all of us know, there are many heterosexuals who are denied marriage, either because they have not been able to connect with an ideal partner, or because they are committed to other interests. There is nothing in the Bible about marriage being a “right” that people can demand. We are not asking more of single homosexuals than we ask of single heterosexuals when we insist on chastity.
Jones and Yarhouse write, “It may be that the church can no more guarantee healing to homosexuals than it can guarantee marriage to disconsolate single heterosexuals. There are many more single Christian heterosexuals ‘doomed’ to sexual abstinence by the church’s ‘narrow’ sexual morality than there are homosexual persons similarly constrained.”
In other words, it would be eminently possible, as many testify, to be committed to chastity even while struggling with homosexual desires, just as heterosexuals can be committed to chastity while struggling with their desires. Paul says that the interests of married people are divided, but that those who are single can live with “undivided devotion to the Lord.”
Chaste homosexuals (ex-gays), like chaste heterosexuals, must be enfolded within the community of the church. They need the support of the wider Christian community, and the larger family of God. Singles, I’ve learned, can serve the Lord in many ways that we as married people cannot. In the next chapter we shall expand on this.
Now, if you are listening today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Until next time, my friend, may God bless you and keep you!
