A 21-year-old man wanted in the brutal stabbing early Monday of an elderly pastor and his wife in their Sussex County home had been taken in by the couple months earlier after falling on hard times, friends say.

Sussex County Detective Derrick McKenzie said law enforcement agencies are looking for Maxim Lloyd Chisholm, who has a prior address in Chesterfield County and is being described as armed and dangerous.

Chisholm, a standout wrestler who attended Cosby High School in Chesterfield, had been cared for over the past nine months by the couple he allegedly attacked about 5:30 a.m. Monday, according to law officers and members of the couple’s church.

Hugh and Carol Mayes were in critical condition at VCU Medical Center on Monday night, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

“They loved him so much, they called him their grandson,” said Stacy Jernigan, a longtime church member at Shiloh Baptist Church in Carson, where Hugh Mayes is pastor.

According to stories from the Midlothian Exchange, Chisholm was adopted when he was 7 years old in Russia and grew up in Chesterfield, becoming a champion wrestler in the 106-pound weight class and describing himself as destined for the Marine Corps.

A Chesterfield schools spokesman was not able to confirm Monday when Chisholm graduated. A summons for a traffic infraction last year described Chisholm, who was known as Max, as 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 115 pounds.

The couple were found in their Yale home early Monday with multiple stab wounds. They had been known to provide help and shelter to Chisholm.

McKenzie described the young man as having had previous problems with area law enforcement.
