Ruth’s Chris Steak House Apologizes to Marvin Sapp After Chicago Restaurant Refused to Serve Him Over Attire

Chart topping gospel singer Marvin Sapp says he’s never been so offended in his life.

Sapp says Ruth’s Chris Steak House turned him and his party of six away because of their attire, stating they only serve individuals dressed in business casual attire.

He posted about the experience on Facebook.

“I can’t comment at this time. I do apologize, I am very sorry but John Deveney, you can contact him,” said Ruth’s Chris General Manager Huntington Turner.

So we did.

Fox 32’s Tisha Lewis reports at Ruth’s Chris Steak House proper attire is required. The following items are not permitted:

  • Hats or caps
  • Athletic wear or sleeveless shirts
  • Sweatshirts or sweatpants
  • T-shirts with offensive graphics or language

A few people in Sapp’s group were reportedly wearing sweatpants but Sapp clearly felt like the restaurant had treated him unfairly.

“Oh, for God’s sakes… Right, right, I mean we’re all in jeans and a sweatshirt, it’s crazy,” said Sherry Emery.

On Sunday, Emery and her party of seven were turned away.

“I was told that my 12 year old son was inappropriately dressed so we couldn’t eat our dinner and it was my dad’s 82nd birthday,” said Emery.

When asked if she knew about the dress code Emery responded, “I don’t know. It makes sense but for a 12 year old it seems a little extreme.”

For Sapp, he called it a double standard.

“I don’t blame him, people wear sweatpants… Yeah, that’s just crazy. Well they lost a nice amount of business tonight,” said Emery.

In Sapp’s case, Fox 32 News has learned the manager apologized and asked if some of his guests could change clothes. The manager also offered to provide complimentary appetizers and drinks to make up for the inconvenience.

By then, it was too late.

  1. I stopped patronizing Ruth’s Chris House several year’s ago after Miz Ruth (or someone in her corporate office) lent the company’s name to some very right winged radical political positions. I do not even recall what it was; but, I actually felt UNSAFE being on her premises. The ads were broadcast on right-winged talk shows nationwide.

Sometimes our freedom of speech disrupts orderliness! I cancelled all my events I had planned for her property.

    • IC. If their freedom of speech doesn’t jive with HOW YOU feel ….. then it’s not valid ? You ARE a true lock stepping Libtard. Try thinking for yourself Pumpkin.

  2. if there are standards for everyone who enters; then these standards would apply to celebrities as well as any other patron!

  3. The dress code is the dress code! He thought bc of his name , the code should change? Uh No! Funny I wouldn’t have considered RC a fancy establishment but I guess they’re trying to keep their standards high. All in all, they did nothing wrong.

  4. What is good for the goose is good for the gander…follow the law and simple instructions pay attention to details and do the right thing regardless of who is watching. Can you imagine, Do you realize how many Souls we have lost because of our disobedience and not doing the right thing the very first time!! Let us all be mindful that God is Omnipresent. We can use these incidents as a teaching tool. Let’s Forgive, Forget and Move on.
