A man has been charged with fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend in front of her children in the South Shore neighborhood, police said.

Myron Mason, 33, of the 8600 block of South Kingston Avenue, was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder and was expected in bond court on Thursday, according to police.

Mason shot Mechelle Lewis, 28, as she sat in a van with her 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son near her home in the 7200 block of South Bennett Avenue around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Lewis was shot several times and died at the scene, police said.

Mason opened the door to the van and took the children and drove off, but he later called police and surrendered, authorities said. The children were not injured and a weapon was recovered from the scene.

Police cordoned off a half-block stretch of Bennett between 72nd and 73rd streets with yellow tape. There were at least six yellow evidence markers near the minivan.

Several family members and friends gathered north of the scene. One woman wept as she hugged another woman who was sitting in a car.
