3 Dead, 4 Injured from Weekend Chicago Shootings


Shootings left at least three people dead and four others wounded Sunday afternoon and evening in Chicago, according to police. 

Two teens were shot about 8:15 p.m. in the 800 block of East 45th Street, police said. One of them, 15, was was dead on the scene, at least the ninth person killed since Friday afternoon across Chicago.

Six people were shot to death and 24 were wounded the first two nights of the holiday weekend.

The other person shot on 45th Street was a 14-year-old boy. He was hit in the leg and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. The two teens were outside when someone in a passing light-colored sedan opened fire, hitting the boys.

An earlier fatal shooting happened just after 4 p.m. on the 3300 block of West Division Street in the city’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. A 28-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the head and shoulder, and was taken to taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Officer Stacey Cooper, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman, citing preliminary information.

About 30 minutes before the Division Street slaying, another person was shot on the 3200 block of West Maypole Avenue, Cooper said.

The man was identified as Lasean Barnes, 38, of the 3000 block of West Polk Street, and he was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

According to preliminary information, a man was standing on Maypole when a beige conversion van pulled up and someone fired shots, striking him in the right abdomen, Cooper said. The van fled east on Maypole, and the victim was taken to Mount Sinai, where he was initially listed in serious condition.

In the Englewood neighborhood about 10:35 p.m., someone shot two men near the intersection of 69th Street and Damen Avenue. The two, 20 and 25, were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. The older man was shot in the leg and the younger was shot in the hip. Both are in stable condition, police said.

About 5:35 p.m., a 19-year-old man was shot in the Albany Park neighborhood – the third person injured in a gang-related shooting there since Thursday. The man was in the 4500 block of North St. Louis Avenue when he exchanged words with someone in a white vehicle. Someone in the vehicle opened fire, hitting him in the leg. The 19-year-old was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in stable condition, police said.

No one was in custody for the attacks, and detectives are investigating.
