Hartford police officers are investigating a shooting that left a pastor injured Sunday morning.

Police were called to the first shooting at Newton Street near Capitol Avenue at 6:30 a.m. where they found a man in the roadway who had been shot several times.

Police identified the victim as 54-year-old Augustus Seal of Shrewsbury, MA.

Officers on scene said the victim was placing flags outside the Hartford First Church of Nazarene when he was shot.

“It’s very sad. I guess no one is safe in this place anymore. If a pastor can’t be safe, I guess we can’t be safe either,” said Marthe Simpini.

A man associated with the church said the victim is the pastor of the church, Rev. Dr. Augustus Sealy.

Instead of having Pastor Sealy pray for them, tonight it’s a role reversal.

“It’s sad, I can’t believe this is happening,” said Leroy Davis.

Churchgoers said the timing couldn’t have been worse because Sealy’s fifth anniversary celebration was planned for Sunday afternoon. The celebration did go on at the request of the assistant pastor, but the mood was much more somber.

“He said we should continue it, whatever business we had today,” Davis said.

When police arrived on the scene, they located Sealy who had three gunshot wounds, two to the right leg and one to the left shoulder area.

Sealy is listed in serious, but stable condition.
