The Rev. Jesse Jackson made an appearance at City Hall Tuesday morning to talk with officials about the immediate need for an urban summit meeting in Detroit.

Jackson says he’s slated to meet with Mayor Mike Duggan this morning to discuss the issue, which he says is a critical need.

Jackson said he spoke with Detroit’s former emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, as well as union officials, state legislators and others about the matter on Monday. He added that council members have also been receptive.

Jackson noted Detroit has a unique opportunity to reinvent itself, noting the volume of vacant homes and lots in the city, the growing support from federal agencies and the renewed commitment of JPMorgan Chase to aid in workforce training, small business and community development efforts.

“Let’s make Detroit a prototype for urban revitalization,” Jackson told reporters Tuesday after briefly addressing council members. “We need a comprehensive plan. It’s a plan to put Detroit back to work and its infrastructure back together.”
