The Latino owner of a barbecue restaurant in Milliken, Colo., is changing his plans for “White Appreciation Day,” KUSA-TV reports.
Edgar Antillon’s plan to give a 10% discount to all white customers at Rubbin Buttz BBQ on June 11 sparked widespread outrage after KUSA first reported it last week.
“We have a whole month for Black History Month,” Antillon told the TV station. “We have a whole month for Hispanic Heritage Month, so we thought the least we could do was offer one day to appreciate white Americans.”
The idea prompted harsh criticism.
“It’s a perpetuation of racism,” civil rights activist Ricardo Romero told KUSA. “It’s wrong. If you’re going to give a discount, give it to the whole community.”
The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies said the restaurant could also face legal consequences, as anyone feeling discriminated against could file a complaint that would trigger an investigation.
