Dave Chappelle fans thought the comedian’s dazed and confused Thursday performance in Detroit was half baked at best.
The usually sharp-witted Chappelle chain-smoked, slurred his speech and shouted at hecklers as he rambled his way through the 9:30 p.m. show at the Fillmore Detroit, according to attendees.
“Dave Chappelle = biggest disappointment,” Misanthropic Me wrote on Twitter. “Showed up drunk and literally told two jokes over two hours.”
Some said the set was so bad they demaned their money back.
“Horrible, don’t go,” Heather Becker wrote on the theater’s Facebook page. “Second show last night was ridiculous. Walked out. Did not get what I paid for….. refunds please!”
Another fan was a little more blunt in her assessment of the show.
“Dave Chappelle really sucked a** tonight in Detroit,” Asia Hamilton wrote on Twitter. “No material equals big waste of money. And I love Dave Chappelle.”
A representative for the comic admitted that Chappelle may have had an off night.
“Out of the 50 shows on the tour, Thursday was definitely not his best set,” the Chappelle spokesman told TMZ. “On the flip side, the incident inspired some additional sharp-witted material and (Friday) he came back with a vengeance.”
Chappelle, who hosted the uproariously funny “Chappelle’s Show” on Comedy Central from 2003 to 2006 before turning down a $50 million contract extension, has had a few odd on-stage moments during his current U.S. tour.
Last month, at a show in Santa Fe, N.M., a man was arrested after he threw a banana peel at the comedian.
Not everyone who attended Chappelle’s show Thursday in Detroit was displeased with his performance.
“I was at the 2nd show,” wrote Andrew Suski. “It was a one of a kind! I feel it was as RAW as it gets… would love to see the routine one day.”
Others blamed the off-the-cuff performance on the audience being bombed, not the comic.
