Mention the name of Tim Tebow and one can expect a wide range of reactions.

If you’re talking football, Tebow is the former Heisman Trophy winner who led the Florida Gators to a pair of NCAA national championships, then became another in the long line of great college players who just didn’t have what it took to play at the top level of the pro game for long.

Bring up Tebow’s name among devout Christians and he is known for wearing his faith in the form of scripture references scrawled on his eye-black patches. He is especially known for “Tebowing,” a gesture of prayer and giving thanks to God on bended knee with a fist pressed to his forehead.

Tebow, the athlete and at-times polarizing pop-culture public figure, is coming to Rapid City as a special guest of the South Dakota Fellowship of Christian Athletes Night of Champions at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Barnett Arena.

His success at Florida led to his becoming the Denver Broncos first-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft. As a starter late in the season, he is remembered for a game-winning overtime touchdown pass to lead the Broncos over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2011-2012 AFC playoffs.

His NFL jerseys became one of the most sought-after items among fans during his short stint as both a starting quarterback and backup with the Broncos and later New York Jets.

The April 14 event in Rapid City will be the fourth of six scheduled appearances for Tebow, currently a college football analyst for ESPN.

The tour starts April 10 in Lake Charles. La., continues in Knoxville, Tenn., on April 12, and Sioux Falls on April 13 before coming to Rapid City.

After the Rapid City event Tebow travels to Sheridan, Wyo., for an outreach event on April 15, before concluding the tour in Grand Island, Neb., on April 16.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes event is a perfect fit for Tebow, said Bob Parsons, West River FCA director.

“We embrace him. He’s a role model. We’re all about influence and impact and that what we’re hoping from this event as Tim comes to Rapid City.”

Parsons said he hopes Tebow’s visit will have a lingering impact, long after he leaves town.

It’s about outreach, it’s about impacting and influencing people for Christ,” Parsons said. “That’s the heartbeat of FCA that this is an outreach event, it’s not just entertainment.”
