Newly released dashcam video shows an Arizona parking lot melee involving at least 15 people that resulted in one death, two significant injuries and seven arrests. Several of the suspects are also members of a Christian family band, according to reports.
Cottonwood police on Friday released the footage of what they have described as the immediate and violent escalation of a situation that began last month with a female Walmart employing being shoved at the bathroom.
The employee said she was shoved shortly before 11 p.m. on March 21. The first responding officer was then attacked and disarmed after going to speak with the suspects, according to a court document obtained by The Arizona Republic.
“A second officer who arrived on the scene reported hearing the first officer say, ‘They got my gun,’ as he confronted five members of the family in the parking lot,” the paper reports.
A total of eight officers and a Walmart loss prevention employee became involved in breaking up the fight and were assaulted, police said in a press release. One officer was shot in the leg and has since been released from the hospital, police told the Republic; other officers suffered minor injuries including cuts and bruises.
On the video, officers can be heard trying to corral the suspects. “No, you are not going to separate me from my parents,” one person says. You can hear the sound of a Taser, followed by gunfire. Police said later that the suspects were surprisingly adept at withstanding pepper spray.
In total, three shots were fired, police said in a release.
