University of Alabama Elects Elliot Spillers as First Black Student Government Association President in 40 Years

The University of Alabama student body Tuesday night elected its first African-American Student Government Association president since Cleo Thomas held the position nearly 40 years ago in 1976.

Elliot Spillers, a junior from Pelham majoring in business management, was declared the winner of the presidential election over Stephen Keller after earning nearly 57 percent of the 14,931 votes tallied in an online election. After learning of his victory, Spillers posted the following message on his Twitter account:

“It is done. With your incredible help, I have been elected SGA President for the 2015-2016 year. Thank you. Thank you so much.”
