WATCH: In Upcoming Interview With VICE News, President Obama Says he’s ‘Embarrassed’ for GOP Over Iran Letter

US President Obama speaks about Iran during meeting with Secretary of Defense Carter at the White House in Washington

President Obama says he’s “embarrassed” for the 47 Republican senators who wrote an open letter to Iran’s leaders this week warning them about a prospective nuclear deal.

“I’m embarrassed for them,” Obama said in taped comments released Friday by VICE News.

“For them to address a letter to the ayatollah — the supreme leader of Iran, who they claim is our mortal enemy — and their basic argument to them is: Don’t deal with our president, because you can’t trust him to follow through on an agreement … That’s close to unprecedented,” Obama said.

In the open letter pushed by Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., the GOP senators told Iran that any nuclear deal signed by Obama and U.S. allies could be undone by a future president or Congress.

Obama told VICE that the letter is “not how America does business” with other countries.

The president also said diplomacy is the best way to prevent Iran from securing the means to make nuclear weapons.

“I’m prepared to take all options to prevent them from getting a nuclear weapon,” Obama said, “but the absolute best option is a diplomatic resolution.”

The full interview with President Obama will be posted to VICE News on Monday, said the website.
