A burning tanker truck closed a stretch of Interstate 94 near the border between Detroit and the suburb of Dearborn.
The fire that sent flames and black smoke into the air and across the area came under control Wednesday afternoon and cleanup is underway.
Dearborn police and fire officials report no serious injuries.
Authorities say the truck was hauling thousands of gallons of petroleum. The tanker burned with a car stopped sideways in front of it.
Michigan Department of Transportation officials say fuel spilled into the sewers, also creating fires.
Shaw says the first 911 calls came in about 11:15 a.m. Police waited for crews to extinguish the flames before investigating.
State transportation officials say the freeway’s eastbound lanes could be closed for hours or even days.
