Smartwatches have generated a ton of interest in recent years, but you still don’t often see people wearing them in real life. That could soon change, though, thanks to the Apple Watch.
In a new report, Strategy Analytics predicts that Apple will “ignite the global smartwatch market” with its forthcoming timepiece, much like the company did with smartphones after the release of the iPhone in 2007. The market researcher reckons that Cupertino will ship some 15 million Apple Watches in 2015, to quickly become the No. 1 smartwatch vendor in the world, capturing 55 percent global market share this year.
“We forecast total global smartwatch shipments to grow 511 percent from 4.6 million units in 2014 to 28.1 million units in 2015,” Strategy Analytics wrote in the report. “Most of the smartwatch growth will come from the new Apple Watch, which we forecast to ship 15.4 million units worldwide in 2015.”
A few key factors will contribute to the watch’s success, namely: Apple’s “famous brand, loyal fan base, deep retail presence, and extensive apps ecosystem.” But a few other things might hold the watch back.
