Hours before Paris Williams, 8, expected to wake up for a fresh start with new clothes at a new school, a gunman shot the slumbering child before fleeing a bloodied home.
Steps away from the New Orlean girl’s bedroom, her 25-year-old mother, Walesha Williams, laid dead in the hallway, shot to death. The gunshots sent her friend running to escape the shooter at a residence at 14535 Duane Road.
But the 39-year-old woman slipped in a pool of blood and was shot repeatedly. She reportedly played dead as the suspect pilfered Williams’ purse for a cell phone and cash, relatives told the Times-Picayune.
She remained still as the shooter went into Paris’ room and shot the little girl in the head.
The survivor in Tuesday’s massacre told police the suspect was Walesha’s new boyfriend, only known as Wayne, but authorities have yet to name him as a suspect. His whereabouts are unknown at this time.
Hours after the shooting, Paris died at a local hospital, leaving relatives wailing in grief outside the home.
“It’s not fair,” Mercedes Brown, Walesha’s aunt, cried. “ She was sleeping. This baby was in her bed. Oh my God, she was in the bed!””
