A community of local Assyrian Christians is holding a vigil Sunday evening in Glendale, praying for the release of the abductees.
“We are the people who have faith in Christ,” said Bishop Mar Aprim Khamis of Assyrian Church of the East in Glendale. “We have been persecuted. We have been massacred. Today it’s not only tragic, it’s genocide.”
Bishop Khamis referried to the abduction of at least 150 people from Assyrian Christian villages in the Middle East by ISIS.
“They came and attacked my country,” said Jaklein Khano, a Valley resident from Syria. Through tears, she said, “They’ve been captured with their mothers and their kids. My sister-in-law. Her father. It’s just ridiculous. Nobody knows if they have been raped, killed or tortured. God knows if they’re hungry.”
