Former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is mulling whether to participate in throwing drills Saturday in Indianapolis at the NFL scouting combine, according to his quarterback coach.
“It’s a game-time decision,” George Whitfield Jr. told USA TODAY Sports Monday morning. “He’s a very big believer in himself, so it’ll be interesting. He’s prepared to do it. Whether he goes in and does it will probably be determined a couple of days from now.
“At this time, he hasn’t made a decision.”
One thing is for sure: Winston will show up in shape, Whitfield said.
He laughed off the misconception created by a picture that appeared Saturday on Twitter showing a puffy-looking Winston when the 6-4, 230-pound quarterback first began workouts in San Diego with Whitfield five weeks ago.
“He’s lost about 12-15 pounds,” Whitfield said. “When you hear stuff about Jameis, the weight and he’s getting fat — What do people think that I’ve been golfing while he’s been playing Call of Duty?
Whitfield said the picture was taken on the second day of workouts. The picture shows a bungee cord wrapped around Winston’s waist, and pulled tightly to help keep Winston positioned properly during a drill.
